About Us
The Rochester Flyers Special Olympics Team serves over 300 athletes with intellectual disabilities, ages 8 and up in the Rochester, MN area. Through sports, our athletes celebrate their abilities, not their disabilities. Their world opens with acceptance and understanding. They become confident and empowered by their accomplishments. They make new friends, and live the Special Olympics athlete oath: Let me win; If I cannot Win; Let me be brave in the attempt.
The Rochester Flyers offer sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic sports for athletes of all ages. These include Aquatics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Flag Football, Golf, Poly Hockey, Powerlifting, and Track & Field. Any athlete, regardless of ability can successfully compete in Special Olympics year round. The competitions are broken into divisions so that athletes can compete successfully with other athletes with similar skills and abilities.
Rochester Flyers is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers—parents, friends, and families of our athletes. This group spends countless hours coaching, training, planning, and organizing the practices, competitions, fundraising and fun events for our athletes. The Flyers wouldn’t exist without the 60+ volunteers that run the organization, coach our athletes, and volunteer at our events! We’re always looking for more volunteers to join the Flyers community.
Leadership Team Members
Our delegation is run by a Local Sports Management Team (LSMT). This structure involves a greater number of volunteers in the management of a delegation, each of whom has a specific responsibility. This is commonly the structure used in larger communities with more athletes and sports offerings and with Community-Based Programs.
